About Vineyard 29
Vineyard 29 takes its name from Highway 29, where the winery sits just north of St. Helena on an east-facing slope at the foot of the Mayacamas range. Its first vintage was 1992. The home vineyard is small: Cabernet Sauvignon planted in 1989, with Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc added in 2000, on gravelly soil laid down by the ancient Napa River. About two miles north, the Aida Estate has grown grapes since Petite Sirah went in during the 1920s; its Zinfandel vines date to 1973 and still make Aida Estate Zinfandel and a late-harvest Zinfandel, though Cabernet Sauvignon is now its main grape.
Wines are made in a gravity-flow winery with caves. Besides the two estate labels, the winery makes a CRU line of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and rosé from Napa fruit, plus a Pinot Noir from Oregon's Willamette Valley.
There are three ways to taste. The Short Pour ($29, 30 minutes) is a quick flight of current CRU wines. The Signature Experience ($110, 90 minutes) starts with a CRU wine, tours the winery and caves, and pours Vineyard 29 and CRU releases with a seasonal spread of local food. The Estate Pairing Experience ($195, 90 minutes) adds the cave tour to a guided tasting of Vineyard 29 and Aida wines, sometimes with library vintages, matched to three seasonal courses; it often books out months ahead. Appointments are made through their website or by email.
Bees N Blooms, an organic lavender farm in Bennett Valley, is about 45 minutes west over the Mayacamas. Plan the lavender for the morning and a cave tour in St. Helena for the afternoon.
