About Potter Settlement Artisan Winery

Potter Settlement Artisan Winery sits on a sixth-generation family farm outside Tweed, land the family has worked for 188 years. Founder Sandor Johnson started the winery there with his parents and was the first in Canada to plant newer cold-hardy, disease-resistant grapes, bringing Frontenac, Marquette, Petite Pearl and Itasca to Ontario. Marquette, a cross of Pinot Noir with a wild North American grape developed at the University of Minnesota, is a house specialty. The estate has 10 planted acres.

The lineup is unusual. Maple Noir is made with Canadian maple syrup, the Dandelion Vidal is billed as the only commercially available dandelion wine in North America, and the fortified Portage has won six gold medals. There are also an unoaked Chardonnay and a Chambourcin rosé, and Sandor has won awards in France for wines made from these newer grapes.

The winery posts hours of 1 to 6 daily. Book tastings and tours through the form on their website or by phone; charcuterie boards come with tastings if ordered 72 hours ahead, and bookings can't be canceled. In winter the farm promotes its Northern Lights Ice Skate Trail, and it hosts vineyard weddings.

Woodland North Lavender Farm near Madoc is about 20 minutes west, so a summer lavender morning and an afternoon tasting in Tweed fit together.
