About The Fox Barn Market & Winery

The Fox Barn is a farm winery and market in a barn believed to date to the 1890s, on 18th Avenue outside Shelby. The Fox family business, N.J. Fox & Sons, bought the barn and its orchards in 1953 and used it for tractors and equipment, with pigs raised in the basement in the late 1950s. Kellie Fox began selling fruit from the barn in 2004, and with Todd she opened the farm market in 2005. A third-generation barn restorer gave it a new roof, siding and paint in 2007.

In 2008 the basement became the winemaking room and the main floor got pine flooring and a tasting bar. The wine and later the hard cider are made from the same fruit the family grows: cherries, peaches, pears, apples and grapes, plus asparagus, which goes into their Odd Fox Asparagus Wine. Wine flights, glasses of cider and wine slushies are poured at the bar.

Small bites such as a meat and cheese board are on the menu. Music is a big part of the season: Fridays @ Fox's brings live music from 6 to 9 PM, and Saturday Sips & Sounds runs on the patio from 2 to 5 PM. The family has farmed here for five generations. In October the barn is open Friday through Sunday afternoons, and it closes for the winter from November through April.

Cherry Point Farm & Market, with its lavender fields, herb garden and labyrinth, is about 15 minutes west toward Lake Michigan. Its market is open daily through October, so visit there in the morning and end at the Fox Barn for music.
