About Closson Chase Vineyards
Closson Chase Vineyards was founded in 1998 by a group of friends that included winemaker Deborah Paskus, at the corner of Closson and Chase Roads in Hillier, about five kilometers inland from Lake Ontario. Its landmark is a century-old dairy barn once owned by the Closson family, renovated in 2002 as the first winery and tasting room and painted pale lavender; it has been a deep purple since 2015. Keith Tyers has been head winemaker since 2015 and became a co-owner in 2026.
The vines grow on a south-facing slope of gravelly limestone soil. The first Chardonnay and Pinot Noir went into the South Clos vineyard in 1999, the Churchside vineyard was planted around a relocated historic church in 2006, and the Ridge vineyard added Pinot Gris in 2016. Recent bottles include the 2024 South Clos Chardonnay and 2024 Churchside Pinot Noir.
Seated tastings are held in the renovated old barrel cellar and booked through their website. The garden, open Wednesday to Sunday, serves wine by the glass, shared flights and small plates on a first-come basis. Groups of seven or more book ahead for tastings at tented picnic tables beside the South Clos vines. Fall events include Maple Fall Madness on October 17–18, 2026, and the Closson Road Christmas Crawl in mid-November.
Prince Edward County Lavender is a few minutes away in Hillier. In July, see the lavender rows first, then come to the purple barn for a tasting.
